Samsung has taken a significant step in enhancing the security features of its Knox platform with the latest update. On Wednesday, the company unveiled new functionalities designed to bolster the protection of file sharing and data backup on its devices. These updates promise a higher level of security through built-in mechanisms, eliminating the need for additional third-party applications.
In an elaborate blog post, Samsung delved into the new capabilities being introduced to Knox for Galaxy devices. One major enhancement is the integration of private sharing into Quick Share. This feature emphasizes privacy in file-sharing activities, allowing users to securely transfer various types of files between devices.
With Private Sharing, the shared data remains accessible solely to the intended recipient. Users can set automatic expiration timers for file visibility and designate specific contacts who can access the content. Additionally, it is possible to enable restrictions like preventing screenshots, setting files to read-only, and revoking access at any time. The feature supports sharing up to 20 files at once with a cumulative size limit of 200MB.
To activate Private Sharing, users must select the file to be shared, tap on the Quick Share option, navigate to the three dots at the upper-right corner, and select the option to turn on Private Sharing.
Another robust addition is the Enhanced Data Protection feature, available on the Galaxy S24 and newer models. This feature enhances the security of data when syncing or backing up to Samsung Cloud by offering end-to-end encryption. This ensures that, even if account credentials are compromised, or the server is attacked, the data remains protected.
Upon enabling the Enhanced Data Protection, users will be prompted to note down a recovery code, crucial for accessing the data if the device is lost. Samsung asserts that not even the company can access the end-to-end encrypted data, providing an exceptional level of security for its users.
