Square Enix has announced a significant milestone in celebration of the seventh anniversary of NieR: Automata, developed by PlatinumGames. The action RPG has now surpassed eight million shipments and digital sales globally, showcasing its enduring popularity and critical acclaim. This remarkable achievement comes within ten months of reaching 7.5 million in sales, demonstrating consistent demand and a growing fanbase.

Initially released on the PS4, NieR: Automata later expanded its horizons to PC, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch platforms. As a narrative continuation from the Drakengard series, it propels players into a distant future scenario where Earth has fallen under alien assault, leading humanity to seek refuge on the Moon. The player steps into the roles of Androids 2B and 9S from the YoRHa unit, embarking on missions to eliminate the mechanical foes deployed by the alien invaders.

The game has resonated well with audiences and critics alike, earning praise for its dynamic combat system, deep narrative, rich character development, and thought-provoking themes. For a more detailed exploration of its success, our review offers insights into what makes NieR: Automata stand out.

Looking ahead, Yosuke Saito, the series producer, revealed in November that the NieR saga is far from over, although a new installment is not currently in the works. The influence of NieR: Automata continues to be felt across the gaming industry, with its characters, notably 2B, extending their presence through cameos in other games. Most recently, 2B made her way into Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising as a downloadable content character, further cementing the game's legacy and impact on popular culture.
